What's in Health Care Reform for CWA Members?

U.S. Congressman and Senators have put forward three different bills to overhaul the United States health care system. Each proposal has many distinct differences from its respectful counterparts.

Three committees in the House of Representatives have come together to put forward one of the bills. The other two bills come from the Senate. One was approved by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and the other is currently being worked on by the Senate Finance Committee.

 

House of Representatives Resolution 3200

The key principles of HR 3200 are "increasing choice and competition, giving Americans peace of mind, improving quality of care for every American, ensuring shared responsibility and protrecting consumers and reducing waste." The bill will ensure that 97 percent of Americans will be covered by an affordable healthcare plan.

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee

This legislation will reduce health costs, protect individuals’ choice in doctors and plans, and assure quality and affordable heath care for Americans. The bipartisan bill includes more than 160 Republican amendments accepted during the month-long mark-up, one of the longest in Congressional history.

Senate Finance Committee

While this bill is not yet public, Committee Chairman Max Baucus has issued a call to action for health reform. He wrote: "In 2009, Congress must take up and act on meaningful health reform legislation that achieves universal coverage while also addressing the underlying problems in our health system. The urgency of this task has become undeniable."
